You're wearing a gorgeous ring, the dress has been bought, venue booked, the planner has her list and now the crowning glory... your wedding cake! It might not be the first thing you booked, but it's a key element to completing a polished wedding look, will wow your guests and create a beautiful centrepiece in your reception. But how do you go about ordering this said wedding cake filled with lucious buttercream and covered with delicate sugar flowers or adorned with hand piped designs? Chocolate or Vanilla or something exotic? Ordering your wedding cake should be a FUN and delicious experience! Here my top tips to get the wedding cake of your dreams and within budget. 1. Book a consultation for your wedding cake about half-way through your planning. Designing the cake too early with your cake artist means that you don't have all the pieces yet (maybe invitations haven't been finalized, florals are undecided, dress appointments to be had) and designing a wedding cake works … [Read more...]

I don’t, and I’m not.

If you follow me in any of my social media outlets (facebook and instagram are definitely my favourite) you know that I'm a mamma... I have three beautiful kids ranging from age 6 years to 7 months. We are, as they say, in the thick of it. They're young, needy, loud, lovely, moody, happy, excited and everything else in between. My husband works full-time, thankfully close by, but sometimes long hours and extra shifts. We have a cat. We have a home. I have a business.  All that to say, I am grateful. Grateful and busy. And the question I get asked a lot is "how do you do it all?" and it's usually followed by "wow you must be like supermom". Here's the answer, "I don't, and I'm not". Nope. Not even close.  You know that saying, "you're not a good husband unless your wife says you are?" Well that's kinda the opposite but true around here. Please don't get me wrong, I know my husband loves me and thinks I'm a good wife. If my husband hears someone say that, he just kinda rolls his … [Read more...]

Orchards and Apples and Coral and Mint

September 25, 2015 by thecocoacakery Leave a Comment

You know when you have something on your calendar and you just CAN'T WAIT for it to arrive? Like Christmas or your birthday? Or the perfectly combined wedding colours and design of a friend? Oh maybe that last one is just me =)  I met with Meaghan and her mom Lisa in the spring and was SOOO excited to hear all that they had planned. I was honoured to be asked to be a part of this day as Lisa is a friend of mine from my previous days in the "real working world" and we've stayed in touch over the years.  They had a stellar team of vendors on board, Rachel A Clingen Wedding Design and Violet Light for Photography, tents provided by Westway Tent Rental, Me My Chef & I for catering and of course yours truly for the cake and cupcakes! The venue was stunning, Country Apple Orchard in King City had all the charm and beauty of orchards and vineyards rolled into one, set in rolling hills and not far out of the city. When putting the cake design together Meaghan and Lisa both loved all … [Read more...]

Simply lace makes it Simply stunning

I have for a long time.. I mean a looooonnngg time been telling you about the beautiful work from Bruna of Simply Lace Photography.  When she asked me to have some fun for her mom's surprise party and gave me her colour scheme - I was hooked.  Not only does she have good taste, but she gives me free reign and then takes beautiful photographs of everything!?!??! What more could a little cake-artist ask for??? Oh right. She's sweet and lovely to work with =) So without further ado- here's how it all came together... Pretty hand painted watercolour flowers on a black and white striped cake with a gorgeous coral and blush sugar peony on top. Delicate little green wafer paper  and shimmery gold leaves to top it off.  The cake flavour is one of our big sellers, strawberry delight with vanilla swiss meringue buttercream. YUM.           Below is her sweet mamma and dad as they surprise her with their party and treats.   We HAD to make … [Read more...]

Pretty in Pink, Mint & Gold

It's hard to pin-point how Niki and I "met"... most likely it was through the rabbit hole of social media but she quickly became a regular client and even attended my Christmas cookie workshop. Busy owner of a delicous local restaurant (Urban Pantry) Niki barely had time to get her wedding organized. When we met for her consult with Frank, we were flying in a million different directions. But once she decided on her design and inspiration, the wedding came together so beautifully you'd think she'd had every detail planned for years. Before the wedding even came together, I also had the privilege of creating Niki's bridal shower goodies! The gorgeous florals on this naked cake were created by gatherings floral studio         Here's a little selection (I had such a hard time choosing) of images from their beautiful day! Photography by Matt Boyce of Xero Digital Photography.      How gorgeous are they!?          Beautiful calligraphy of seating … [Read more...]

From inspiration to cake

September 13, 2015 by thecocoacakery 6 Comments

Ever wonder how a cake gets designed? Who makes the final call on  cake design or theme? How does it all work? Here's a little insight with a recent cake I created! Sometimes you meet with a client and they have lots of pictures of what they'd like, and it's easy to compile and create a cake sketch based on all their ideas and wishes. Other times you just get a few pointers and free rein. This can either be exhilarating and the best thing since sliced bread or a major case of writers block. It really depends on whether you enjoy the subject. When the subject is cake design being inspired is definitely key! For this cake I asked the client what she liked and she said: PURPLE!  (I need to admit that purple is probably one of my least favourite colours - shocking to some, I know - but deal with it,  I'm a aqua- seafoam/pink/white/gold fan, I also can't choose any specific favourite).  Since PURPLE doesn't really steer me down one specific path for a sixteen year olds cake, I … [Read more...]
